THE ART OF FRAME DRUMMING
&
IMPROVISING

The frame drum is a single headed drum that dates back to 5300 B.C., and is found both historically and in modern times in countries such as Italy, India, Morocco, Egypt, Spain and Persia.  In this special clinic, we will engage in a comprehensive study of learning how to play the frame drum, incorporating traditional drumming techniques, traditional rhythms and rhythmic concepts from around the world.

Clinic includes learning:

  • Playing in three frame drum styles (“Tar”, “Free Hand”, “Lap”).
  • How to play in the “double frame drum style.”
  • Traditional Middle Eastern & Persian rhythms.
  • Intricate group compositions.
  • Theoretical approaches on how to easily improvise in both even and odd meters, based on concepts found in North and South Indian drumming musics.
  • Solkattu (traditional South Indian rhythmic vocal exercises).
  • How to notate for any type of hand drum.
  • Advanced frame drum techniques (ie Persian Rolls, Snaps).
  • How to apply frame drum techniques to other types of drums such as conga, drumset and dgembe.

    Details:
  • Clinic is tailored to all levels and lasts 2-2.5 hours.
  • Instructional Handout Booklet included in the clinic.
  • With three weeks notice, Cooperman Co. can provide frame drums, which will be available for sale after the clinic.
