THE ART OF FRAME DRUMMING
&
IMPROVISING |
The frame drum is a single headed drum that dates back to 5300 B.C., and is
found both historically and in modern times in countries such as Italy,
India, Morocco, Egypt, Spain and Persia. In this special clinic, we will
engage in a comprehensive study of learning how to play the frame drum,
incorporating traditional drumming techniques, traditional rhythms and
rhythmic concepts from around the world.
Clinic includes
learning:
- Playing in three frame drum styles (“Tar”, “Free Hand”, “Lap”).
- How to play in the “double frame drum style.”
- Traditional Middle Eastern & Persian rhythms.
- Intricate group compositions.
- Theoretical approaches on how to easily improvise in both even and
odd meters, based on concepts found in North and South Indian drumming
musics.
- Solkattu (traditional South Indian rhythmic vocal exercises).
- How to notate for any type of hand drum.
- Advanced frame drum techniques (ie Persian Rolls, Snaps).
- How to apply frame drum techniques to other types of drums such as
conga, drumset and dgembe.

Educational and Hands-On Workshop
for Children (K-12)
In this workshop, we will learn about drumming from the Middle East,
Africa, Europe and India. Children will get a chance to drum on various
types of traditional ethnic instruments. They will also learn about the
culture and history of music from around the world.
